The gallery gets a face-lift !

After two months of intensive work that included sawing through flagstones, raising the ceiling, as well as a few surprises and a lot of dust, we inaugurated the new gallery on 15 December. Having doubled its size, we now have over 200m2 dedicated to images of the mountains and nature.
Over 300 people attended the opening of this new space on the first floor.

Four new areas have been created. One houses an exhibition of Diasecs (plexiglass mounted on dibond), a process that gives the images greater depth. My travel photographs from Nepal to Peru, via Tibet, Pakistan and Bolivia are exhibited here, giving lovers of wide-open spaces a taste of the spirit of these beautiful destinations…
Another space brings together photos of the Alps in general. For while Mont Blanc is at the heart of our work, we haven’t forgotten the Dolomites, Valais and the Oberland, as the beauty of the mountains has no borders.

In the other space open to the public we have decided to exhibit the biggest names in nature and travel photography. Vincent Munier has done us the honour of being the patron of this first exhibition. He is recognised as one of the best nature photographers at work today and his images speak for themselves. Inspired by Japanese minimalism, he is the only photographer to have won the celebrated BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year award three times. In addition, Nikon Japan has made him its official ambassador. Suffice to say, he is a leading light in his field and a remarkable man. His exhibition runs for six months and naturally his prints are on sale in the gallery.

Our sculptor Paolo Albertelli, in collaboration with Vincent, has reinterpreted his photos to create a stunning new series of sculptures.
Finally, the mountain guide, crystal hunter and artist Roland Cretton, who sculpts in stone, has taken a completely fresh look at his raw materials to bring us a series of new and original works… To be explored in the gallery, naturally.

This space is now dedicated to two main areas : nature and humanism. Chamonix is an extraordinary place where we can perceive nature and explore the splendour of a world in which we are merely simple representatives in just a few clicks. Olivier Follmi the author of a host of books on the cultures of the world (Editions de la Martinière) will be our next guest exhibitor.

The gallery is gradually becoming a venue for exchanges and different representations of the mountains. Through images and sculptures, marrying the intimate with the magnificent, we are innovating to bring you decorative pieces to adorn your chalets and apartments.

So don’t hesitate to come and visit us the next time you are in Chamonix and explore these new and fresh interpretations…

Photography courses and trips

Ever since the gallery first opened we have been asked to organise photography courses and masterclasses. Mario has been committed to a series of trips and until now has not had time to respond to these requests. A well-known author and photographer, Mario is also a fully qualified mountain leader and can meet this demand. This has now been done and we are offering a series of courses in both the Alps and the Himalayas where avid photographers can join Mario and exchange advice and opinions on technique, photography and the mountains in general.

Details of the various options are available from the website.
Three 2-day courses around the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc are already scheduled for next summer and there are still a few places available.
Three trips to Nepal and Tibet have also been organised. The first trip, 19 days in the Langtang in March, run with Agence Atalante is already full.

Don’t hesitate to contact us for more information.

Forthcoming projects…montagnes suisse livre

A book on the most beautiful mountains in Switzerland written with Jean Troillet and published by Editions du Belvédère is scheduled to come out at the end of 2013.
In advance of its publication (copies can be reserved at the gallery), a few images to take us away and escape to the mountains…

As it is only the start of the year I would like to wish you a happy new year, spent as much as possible in the mountains, where men dream of caressing the heavens and the stars…

Mountain best wishes
